Employee portrait: Abraham Ukbe Mehari

Abraham Ukbe Mehari’s success story is very special. He came to Germany from Eritrea in 2014. At that time, he had no idea that he would find two great loves in his new home: his wife – and driving a forklift truck. As a loader in the HUB, he and his colleagues load general cargo from all over Germany, especially during the night shift. Fast and safe handling is essential for goods and products to reach their destination on time and undamaged the next day.

Niederaula, Industriestrasse 5, 6 p.m.: For Abraham Ukbe Mehari, work starts when most people have finished. After a short briefing with the shift manager, he begins loading the swap bodies that must be ready by half past six at the latest. Until shortly before midnight, lorries carrying goods from Germany and all over Europe arrive at System Alliance Hub Betriebsgesellschaft and are handled by specialists from the logistics service provider. A few hours later, the last vehicles with fully loaded swap bodies are already leaving the site. Transshipment is timed precisely so that all loads arrive at their destination by half past five in the morning.

Ukbe Mehari has been working at the System Alliance HUB for five years now. He applied in 2018 and started working as a warehouse employee shortly afterwards. Since then, the late starter has steadily worked his way up, first becoming an unloader and finally a loader. In addition to a great deal of dexterity, he needs a good eye for the load-bearing capacity, condition and quality of the cargo in order to be able to load it safely. The chance to get a forklift licence was a true highlight for Ukbe Mehari: “Driving a forklift is the best thing!” he says, beaming.

He still often thinks about his early days in Niederaula. “My apartment was empty,” he remembers the time after the move. But his employer and his colleagues supported him and his wife as best they could. Ukbe Mehari still feels this huge solidarity within the team today. When it gets too cold to cycle the short distance from his apartment to the HUB, he likes to get a lift. Even during shifts, he can always find time to chat with the team over a cup of coffee. What he also appreciates about working at night is that he has more time during the day for his hobbies, such as cooking and playing football.
